Em 2024, é impossível discutir o cenário social e econômico do país sem mencionar a explosão das BETs e outros jogos de apostas. Segundo um relatório da XP Investimentos, essas atividades já movimentam 1% do PIB e comprometem 20% do orçamento livre das famílias mais pobres. Já a consuloria PWC estima que as apostas já representam 1,38% do orçamento médio familiar desses estratos de menor renda, um aumento de cinco vezes em relação a cinco anos atrás, quando era de 0,27%.
Com o sucesso das marcas de apostas, surgiu também uma nova realidade, um tipo de epidemia ainda silenciosa, oculta nas telas dos celulares de inúmeros brasileiros, o vício em jogos de apostas. Mas quais são as estratégias psicológicas que essas empresas utilizam para viciar seus usuários? Qual é o impacto dos jogos de tigrinho e das apostas esportivas no psicológico dos indivíduos? Quais são os riscos envolvidos?
Para discutir essas questões, o Pauta convidou Altay de Souza. Doutor em Psicologia Experimental pela USP e graduando em Estatística pelo IME-USP, Altay também é pesquisador do Departamento de Psicobiologia da UNIFESP e do Centro de Comunicação e Ciências Cognitivas da ECA-USP. Today’s Great Political Fiction is Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty (2004), which is set between Thatcher’s two dominant general election victories of 1983 and 1987. A novel about the intersection between gay life and Tory life, high politics and low conduct, beauty and betrayal, it explores the price of power and the risks of liberation. It also contains perhaps the greatest of all fictional portrayals of a real-life prime minster: Thatcher dancing the night away.

No sábado (17), o bilionário Elon Musk, dono da rede social X (anteriormente conhecida como Twitter), anunciou o fechamento dos escritórios da plataforma no Brasil. A decisão resulta de uma crescente tensão entre Musk e o ministro do Supremo Tribunal Federal, Alexandre de Moraes, que iniciou em abril deste ano, quando uma série de e-mails de funcionários da empresa foram revelados. Na época Musk chegou a chamar Moraes de "ditador brutal". Logo depois, Moraes incluiu Musk no inquérito das milícias digitais para investigar se o empresário cometeu crimes de obstrução à Justiça, organização criminosa e incitação ao crime.
Para avaliar o cenário que levou Elon Musk a fechar os escritórios da X no Brasil, o Pauta Pública desta semana recebe o professor e pesquisador David Nemer. Atualmente, ele integra o Departamento de Estudos de Mídia e é também afiliado do Departamento de Antropologia e do programa de Estudos Latino-Americanos da Universidade da Virgínia. Para Nemer, a decisão de encerrar as atividades do antigo Twitter no Brasil é sinal de que Musk quer violar as leis do país sem ter que lidar com as consequências judiciais e financeiras. O que, para o especialista, é um péssimo sinal.
