In this video I’m building a 3.6m wide steel gate using rivets and traditional joinery, with very little welding. It’s lighter than I originally planned, so I wasn't sure how it would handle flex.
The build uses a mix of mortice and tenon joints in steel along with riveted connections, rather than relying on welding for everything.

How do we know where the moon came from? In this episode, Howtown dives into the giant impact hypothesis (the least bad theory of lunar origin) and the growing evidence that the story of Theia may be more complicated than the textbook version. We explore how scientists measure the Moon’s distance, mass, and angular momentum, why Earth’s Moon is so unusually large compared with other moons in the solar system, and how Apollo moon rocks transformed the debate over the origin of the Moon. Along the way, we unpack Robin Canup’s simulations, synestia and multiple-impact, evection resonance, and the “isotope crisis”: why Moon rocks are chemically almost identical to Earth despite models suggesting the Moon should be made mostly from an impactor. From lunar eclipses and amateur astronomy to Apollo samples, South Pole missions, Theia, Artemis, Chang’e, and the search for mantle rocks, this is a deep look at moon formation, planetary science, and how scientists reconstruct what happened more than 4 billion years ago.

On January 16th of 1980, Japanese customs officials found 7.7 ounces of cannabis in Paul McCartney's luggage as he entered the country, resulting in a 10-day stay in a Tokyo prison and the cancellation of his tour of Japan with Wings.
After being released, McCartney was told never to return. Five days into his stay, reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry sent a letter to Tokyo's Minister of Justice in an effort lend his support.

For a while now, I've wanted to try mixing gallium and indium metal together by shoving them into each other, where something interesting should happen.
More specifically, they form an alloy that's liquid at room temperature, and when mixed with tin, they form something called Galinstan. Galinstan is a lot like mercury, and is often used as a less toxic replacement, in things like thermometers.
After building up the walls of the kiln, I have to begin a more difficult task: building a roof. Today I make a flat roof out of refractory bricks, inspired by Nils Lou's design for a Minnesota flattop kiln, for my small wood-fired pottery kiln that will hopefully reach 1300 degrees celsius, or cone 10.
I refer to Steve Harrison's "Small Portable Woodfired Kiln," Nils Lou's "The Art of Firing," and Fred Olsen's "The Kiln Book." They are all available to read for free on the Internet Archive.
I use a combination of dense firebrick and soft firebrick (IFB). There were quite a few obstacles in my attempt to build my first kiln roof, but I got through it and ended with something usable.

Author Leopoldina Fortunati sat down with Sara R. Farris to discuss the new English edition of her classic The Arcana of Reproduction – now available from Verso Books.
Interview was recorded at the Verso office in London during the Historical Materialism Conference, 2025.
The Arcana of Reproduction is a foundational text and essential contribution to today’s discussions of social reproduction and the history of Italian feminism. Fortunati’s work provides some of the earliest theorizations of ‘immaterial,’ ‘affective,’ and ‘caring’ labor, and of the role of technology in reproduction, articulated decades before their popular reception in English academic literature. Reading this work some 50 years after its original publication gives us the tools to analyze the contemporary state of capitalist development and of women’s lives today. The text remains prefigurative and essential in our era of digital labor.
