This ancient Egyptian model boat was created around 4,000 years ago to carry its owner on an eternal journey on the rivers of the afterlife. Placed in the tomb of a wealthy Egyptian as a funerary offering, it was intended to help the deceased navigate the world beyond.
In this film, we chart the course of this remarkable vessel from the tombs at Meir to the British Museum in 1894, before continuing its extraordinary journey to Museums and galleries around the world.
After four thousand years, this little craft has travelled farther than anyone could have imagined. Weathering empires, crossing oceans, and circumnavigating the globe many times over. Join us as we navigate just one small stretch of its endless voyage from London to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum in Mumbai India.

Just had one of the coolest days of my life with my friend Evan Stout (@yellowstonewildlifeguideco).
Woke up at 4:30 in the morning to drive around Yellowstone National Park with Evan to spot wolves at known den locations.
The wolves in this video are members of the Rescue Creek pack, about a mile and a half from us on the Blacktail Plateau. The pack consists of 5–6 adults and 6 puppies.
I didn’t get a video of the puppies, but we did see a few pop out of the den, as well as a couple of the wolves initiating play. At one point they started howling, and it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard. We also saw two members of the Wapiti Lake pack sleeping at a different spot in the park.
I’ll post more about this tomorrow, but I have to say this was one of the coolest days of my life because I got to cruise around the park with an expert wildlife guide who not only knows an incredible amount about the wolves, but also has extensive experience spotting wildlife around the world and knows an incredible amount about the park and its history. Not to mention, I got to spend over six hours nerding out about anthropology, ecology, history, and our shared love for dogs and wolves.
In fact, as Evan pointed out, seeing how many people come to the park every day to observe and respect the wolves is awesome. It’s a super cool and unique experience to share these moments and this knowledge with complete strangers from all over the world who come to see the same thing.

Beauty is big business, and the rise of looksmaxxing and increasingly invasive treatments is raising the alarm on the ways that our looks matter in our personal and social lives. Ellie and David speak with philosopher Heather Widdows about how the emphasis on beauty in the present day constitutes a real shift from previous eras. Beauty is no longer taken as a sign of moral goodness, but itself has become a moral ideal. This applies worldwide. The “beauty ideal” is seeping into practically every culture and coming to be expected of more and more people for longer periods of their lifespan. They touch on the four elements of the beauty ideal that Widdows identifies and reflect on their own beauty practices and what it means to be complicit in a toxic system. What started the Palisades Fire, and why did the LA arson trial fall apart? This Howtown episode investigates the deadly Pacific Palisades wildfire, the smaller New Year’s Eve Lachman Fire, and the federal arson case against Jonathan Rinderknecht. Prosecutors argued that the Lachman Fire became a hidden holdover fire, smoldering in roots and dense vegetation before reigniting during Santa Ana winds and becoming the catastrophic Palisades Fire. We examine how ATF fire investigators determine fire origin and cause using wildfire forensics, burn patterns, fire behavior, wind direction, topography, fuel, surveillance camera footage, ALERTCalifornia cameras, cell phone location data, ignition source testing, and lab experiments. The episode also looks at competing theories in the Palisades Fire investigation, including fireworks, cigarette ignition, open flame, accidental fire, intentional arson, smoldering roots, and reignition. At trial, prosecutors pointed to Rinderknecht’s location, behavior, searches, messages, 911 calls, and alleged motive, while the defense argued there was no direct evidence, no smoking gun, no recovered ignition source, and serious uncertainty in the wildfire investigation. The LA arson trial ended with a deadlocked jury, a mistrial, and a 10–2 split, raising questions about reasonable doubt, negative corpus, forensic science, ATF methods, LAFD response, the Skull Rock trailhead, the Lachman Fire origin, and why proving wildfire arson is so difficult after the evidence has burned away.

Bindings have been made of all kinds of materials – leather, parchment, vellum, ivory, precious metals – to satisfy the needs of owners from students to monarchs. The ways they were made and decorated have evolved steadily over time, and many countries have their own distinctive traditions.
David Pearson gives an illustrated talk based on his new book, Bookbindings: an Illustrated History, showcasing the Bodleian's outstanding bookbinding collections and exploring their interest and value.
