The Minolta RD-175 from 1995 Is Pure Genius

This video is a long time coming, and not just because this camera is 30 years old now :) (1995 was 30 years ago???) The Minolta RD175 is the first DSLR under $10,000, and it did this by using three separate 1/2" CCD sensors to get the cost down. It was a good value then and incredibly still works well today.

Rebuilding the Tiny Wood Kiln, and Firing Again - Wood Fired Pottery Kiln ep. 6

After the first iteration of this kiln failed to reach temperature, I'm back at it with some thoughtful improvements.

Most importantly, I dive deep into the heart of wood kiln design: draft, and how chimney design affects draft. Draft is necessary to pull fresh air into the firebox to burn the wood. When a wood-fired pottery kiln isn't increasing in temperature as expected, insufficient draft should be the first suspected culprit.

The design uses Australian potter Steve Harrison's "Small Portable Woodfired Kiln" as a close reference for proportions. https://tonightmyfingerssmellofgarlic...

I use a combination of dense firebrick, soft firebrick (IFB), and refractory castable cement.The roof is a Nils Lou Minnesota flattop design, and the fire grate is welded out of old rebar. Today we're on a hunt with artists through time, searching for the blackest black. We’re after the deepest blacks, the most accurate blacks and, the most atmospheric blacks.

Beks is joined by artist Stuart Semple to help answer questions such as: is black really a colour and how do we see the colour black?

Step back in time to the Palaeolithic era to discover ancient cave paintings at the Lascaux caves. Then jump forward in time to hear about the scientific breakthrough Vantablack and the arguments it has caused.

This ancient boat has travelled for 4000 years.

This ancient Egyptian model boat was created around 4,000 years ago to carry its owner on an eternal journey on the rivers of the afterlife. Placed in the tomb of a wealthy Egyptian as a funerary offering, it was intended to help the deceased navigate the world beyond.

In this film, we chart the course of this remarkable vessel from the tombs at Meir to the British Museum in 1894, before continuing its extraordinary journey to Museums and galleries around the world.

After four thousand years, this little craft has travelled farther than anyone could have imagined. Weathering empires, crossing oceans, and circumnavigating the globe many times over. Observing Wolves in Yellowstone

Just had one of the coolest days of my life with my friend Evan Stout (@yellowstonewildlifeguideco).

Woke up at 4:30 in the morning to drive around Yellowstone National Park with Evan to spot wolves at known den locations.

The wolves in this video are members of the Rescue Creek pack, about a mile and a half from us on the Blacktail Plateau. The pack consists of 5–6 adults and 6 puppies.

I didn’t get a video of the puppies, but we did see a few pop out of the den, as well as a couple of the wolves initiating play. At one point they started howling, and it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard. We also saw two members of the Wapiti Lake pack sleeping at a different spot in the park.

I’ll post more about this tomorrow, but I have to say this was one of the coolest days of my life because I got to cruise around the park with an expert wildlife guide who not only knows an incredible amount about the wolves, but also has extensive experience spotting wildlife around the world and knows an incredible amount about the park and its history. Not to mention, I got to spend over six hours nerding out about anthropology, ecology, history, and our shared love for dogs and wolves.

In fact, as Evan pointed out, seeing how many people come to the park every day to observe and respect the wolves is awesome. It’s a super cool and unique experience to share these moments and this knowledge with complete strangers from all over the world who come to see the same thing.
