Most of the largest dams in the world have gated spillways with whole teams of staff dedicated to their operation. But it’s still a challenge, especially for small owners like cities. So there is another option, kind of in between controlled and uncontrolled spillways, and its use is growing worldwide.

In Tips From A Shipwright – Episode 23 of the Building Orca series, Lou takes the next step in shaping the legendary hull by building Mold #5.
This episode dives deep into the precision side of boatbuilding, where accuracy on the loft floor translates directly to the final form. Lou walks through how to properly offset your lines to account for planking thickness, ensuring the finished hull lands exactly where it should. From there, he demonstrates how to transfer those lofted lines onto the mold stock, keeping everything fair and true.
You’ll also learn how to:
Read and pull bevel angles directly off the loft floor
Execute progressive bevel cuts for a clean, accurate fit
Assemble and align mold sections while only laying out half the mold—letting symmetry do the rest
Whether you’re a seasoned builder or just getting into traditional methods, this episode breaks down techniques that are fundamental to strong, accurate mold construction.
A big thank you to Arnold Lumber for supplying all the wood that makes these molds possible.
Subscribe and follow along as the Orca continues to take shape—one mold at a time.

An overview of seismic base isolation for buildings
Earthquakes are such a challenge in engineering: unpredictable both in time and intensity. But I love this solution of base isolation because it’s so intuitive. It’s something my five-year-old would come up with: just put a suspension system on a building.

In this episode of Tips From A Shipwright, Lou walks through how he modified our new Powermatic 20-inch Bandsaw for precision progressive beveling.
Progressive beveling is a critical step in traditional wooden boatbuilding, and Lou breaks down the setup so it can be applied to any bandsaw — not just a dedicated shipwright’s saw. He explains the angle adjustments, alignment considerations, and workflow needed to achieve consistent, repeatable bevels with accuracy and efficiency.
This demonstration sets the stage for the next major phase of the Orca build, where we’ll begin fabricating molds. Proper bevel preparation now ensures tight fits, clean glue lines, and fair lines down the road.
If you’re interested in boatbuilding, advanced bandsaw setup, or refining your shop processes, this is a detailed, practical walkthrough you won’t want to miss.

In this video, Lou walks you through the entire bike, detailing the motor, frame, custom components, upgrades, and the craftsmanship that makes this classic Panhead stand out. He covers the build history, condition, performance, and the small details that only a true enthusiast would appreciate. If you know vintage Harleys, you know how rare and iconic a ’58 Panhead is — and this one has been thoughtfully customized while keeping the spirit of the original machine alive.
