Between 1949 and 1950, Beijing underwent one of the most important transitions in its modern history: it became the capital of the newly founded People’s Republic of China and began transforming from an old imperial and Republican-era city into the political center of a new socialist state.
In early 1949, Beijing was still commonly known as Beiping. During the final phase of the Chinese Civil War, Communist forces surrounded the city, which was held by the Nationalists. Rather than being destroyed in a major battle, the city was peacefully transferred to Communist control in January 1949 after negotiations with Nationalist general Fu Zuoyi. This was significant because it preserved much of the city’s historic architecture, including the Forbidden City, temples, walls, and traditional neighborhoods.
Later that year, the city’s name was changed back from Beiping to Beijing, meaning “Northern Capital.” On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China from Tiananmen Gate. From that moment, Beijing became the symbolic and administrative heart of the new government.
During 1949–1950, the new Communist leadership began reorganizing the city’s political, social, and economic life. Government ministries, party offices, military institutions, and cultural organizations were established or expanded in Beijing. The city also saw campaigns aimed at restoring order, controlling inflation, registering residents, and bringing businesses, schools, and public institutions under the authority of the new state.
The period also marked the beginning of major ideological and social changes. Public rallies, propaganda campaigns, and political education became common. The new government emphasized discipline, reconstruction, and socialist values. Although the most dramatic urban redevelopment came later in the 1950s, the foundations were laid during these first years.
Overall, Beijing between 1949 and 1950 was a city in transition: it moved from civil war uncertainty into its role as the capital of a new revolutionary state. Its historical identity as an imperial capital remained visible, but its political meaning changed profoundly as it became the center of Communist China.

„Dem Frieden verpflichtet“ ist ein DDR-Dokumentarfilm des Filmstudios der NVA über das Großmanöver „Waffenbrüderschaft 80“, das vom 4. bis 12. September 1980 auf dem Gebiet der DDR stattfand.
Inhaltlich zeigt der Film das Manöver als große Demonstration militärischer Geschlossenheit der Staaten des Warschauer Vertrags. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die gemeinsame Übung verschiedener Teilstreitkräfte, die Zusammenarbeit der „Bruderarmeen“ und die Darstellung der NVA als verlässlicher Bestandteil des sozialistischen Militärbündnisses. Das Manöver selbst war eines der größten auf DDR-Gebiet: Beteiligt waren rund 40.000 Soldaten aus der DDR, der Sowjetunion, Polen, der ČSSR, Rumänien, Ungarn und Bulgarien.
Der Film folgt dabei weniger einer individuellen Handlung als einer propagandistisch geprägten Dokumentarstruktur: Truppenbewegungen, Gefechtsübungen, Luft- und Seestreitkräfte, Artillerie, Fallschirmjäger und koordinierte Gegenangriffe werden als Beweis für Einsatzbereitschaft, Disziplin und internationale Solidarität inszeniert. Die Botschaft des Films ist deutlich: Militärische Stärke wird nicht als Aggression, sondern als Beitrag zur Sicherung von Frieden und Sozialismus dargestellt. Das passt auch zum Motto des Manövers: „Vereint für Frieden und Sozialismus – dem Feind keine Chance“.
Aus heutiger Perspektive ist „Dem Frieden verpflichtet“ vor allem als zeitgeschichtliches Dokument interessant. Er zeigt nicht nur militärische Abläufe, sondern auch die politische Selbstdarstellung der DDR und des Warschauer Pakts am Beginn der 1980er-Jahre. Der Film vermittelt ein offizielles Bild von Stärke, Bündnistreue und Friedensrhetorik, bleibt dabei aber klar innerhalb der Sprache und Ideologie staatlicher DDR-Militärpropaganda.

This episode dives deep into the precision side of boatbuilding, where accuracy on the loft floor translates directly to the final form. Lou walks through how to properly offset your lines to account for planking thickness, ensuring the finished hull lands exactly where it should. From there, he demonstrates how to transfer those lofted lines onto the mold stock, keeping everything fair and true.
You’ll also learn how to:
Read and pull bevel angles directly off the loft floor
Execute progressive bevel cuts for a clean, accurate fit
Assemble and align mold sections while only laying out half the mold—letting symmetry do the rest
