A war crimes tribunal in The Hague has sentenced former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to 25 years in prison for war crimes dating back to the 1990s war of independence from Serbian control. While judges rejected the charges of targeting a civilian population, Thaci and his co-defendants were convicted of murder, cruel treatment, torture and arbitrary detention. The panel found all four accused — Thaci, Veseli, Selimi and Krasniqi — criminally responsible through their significant contribution to a joint criminal enterprise. The convictions cover arbitrary detention involving 385 individuals, cruel treatment involving 49, torture involving 303 and murder involving 96. Prosecutors had been seeking 45 years in prison for Thaci. There has been an angry response in Pristina, where thousands of Kosovo Albanians see Thaci not only as the country's former president but also as a symbol of Kosovo's liberation, making the judgment particularly painful for many. The decision comes against a backdrop of political deadlock in Kosovo, with repeated elections failing to produce a stable government. The prosecution's case centred on command control and individual responsibility, arguing that the accused were at the head of a quasi-guerrilla movement and targeted people suspected of collaborating with Serbian officials.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Beijing for talks with his Chinese counterpart, as Tehran faces growing military and economic pressure from the United States and sanctions from the UN. The visit comes a week before Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington, and is Araghchi's second trip to Beijing since the US-Israel war on Iran began in February. China is Iran's largest economic and trade partner and buys about 90 per cent of Iran's oil exports, while also maintaining strong relations with Saudi Arabia and other regional powers. Beijing is calling for restraint, a return to dialogue and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as the conflict continues to threaten shipping and trade across the region. China has also been hosting a 13-member Taliban delegation at the Xiangshan Defense Forum, despite not formally recognising the Taliban government, reflecting Beijing's policy of engaging with a wide range of countries. Tehran is expected to brief Beijing on its confrontation with Washington, while China continues to support the 2015 nuclear deal and says any future agreement should build on the existing framework.

He said Iran cannot fully close the Strait of Hormuz while the US cannot fully open it, meaning the stalemate is likely to continue, and warned that Tehran has an interest in choosing escalation over surrender.

A residential building in Gaza City has collapsed, leaving at least 70 people missing, including children. Rescuers have pulled out 11 bodies and 12 survivors, while Gaza Civil Defence says more than 100 Palestinians are still trapped beneath the rubble, including at least 50 children. The building, which housed displaced people, had previously been damaged in an Israeli strike, leaving it cracked and structurally unsound. Families had no other choice but to shelter inside the partially damaged structure, which collapsed as they were sleeping at around 1am. Rescue crews and residents have been digging through the rubble, with a lack of heavy equipment making rescue operations more difficult. Civil Defence says at least 2,000 buildings in Gaza are in a similar condition and at risk of collapse at any moment. There is a severe shortage of shelter, with people forced to live in partially damaged buildings because of a lack of tents and other shelter supplies. Israel continues to restrict the entry of construction materials and equipment into Gaza, while promised shelter supplies under the ceasefire have yet to materialise on the ground.
