錫器が日本に伝えられたのは、今から約1300年程前、遣隋使の手によるものと言われています。
鎌倉時代初期に栄西が現在の中国の宋に渡り、茶壷作り職人を連れて来たのが錫職人のルーツとも言われています。江戸時代の中期に大阪に産地が形成されました。

Tin vessels were brought in Japan between the 7th and 9th century. Some of them have been kept in Syosoin (Treasure house) in Nara. In ancient times, the tin vessel was mainly used as an object for Shinto and Buddhist deities.
In Edo period, it came to be used widely among the public. Molten tin is poured into a mold.
After a rough shape is cast, it is shaped with a brade on a lathe. Unlike other metals, tin is the only one that can be shaped on a lathe because of its relatively low hardness.
