Making color changing mercury

Today I have some nice and shiny mercury metal, and I'm gonna do something that I think is kind of magical.

More specifically, I want to make color changing mercury, and to do that, I need to make mercury (II) iodide. What's special about mercury (II) iodide is that it exhibits something called thermochromism, meaning that it changes colors, at different temperatures.
