All About The New Telescope NASA Just Launched, with Jason Rhodes

💾

Get the NEW StarTalk book, 'Lost in Space: 5,000 Facts for Navigating the Universe' on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4cCD19e

How do you build a telescope to study something you can't see? Neil deGrasse Tyson and Paul Mecurio sit down with Jason Rhodes, senior research scientist at JPL, to explore the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and its search for answers on dark energy and dark matter.

What is dark energy? Who was Nancy Grace Roman? We explore the story of Nancy Grace Roman herself before diving into why Lagrange Point 2 has become the most valuable piece of real estate in space. When will this special spot in space get too full? The conversation also tackles the growing problem of satellite streaks contaminating observations from both ground and space-based telescopes.

How does Roman actually measure dark energy? Jason walks through three approaches: using Type Ia supernovae as standard candles to measure the universe's accelerating expansion, mapping the clustering of galaxies across cosmic time, and using weak gravitational lensing to trace dark matter by the subtle distortions it imprints on light from distant galaxies. Will this telescope finally put an end to Hubble tension? Could evolving dark energy or modified gravity finally replace Einstein's cosmological constant?

Learn about the two different devices within the Roman telescope: the coronagraph and the wide field. We explore how the coronagraph could enable direct imaging of exoplanets and eventually the search for atmospheric biomarkers like oxygen and methane. We talk about how microlensing could detect rogue planets floating free of any star, which may actually outnumber planets in stable orbits. Plus, how much information can a single pixel bring? More than you’d think!

How The Brain Perceives Time, with David Eagleman

💾

What are the limits of the human mind? Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly turn the telescope inward exploring sensory perception, dreaming, synesthesia, time, and the astonishing flexibility of the human brain with neuroscientist David Eagleman. Why does time seem to slow down during an emergency?

We explore the brain’s flexibility in how it receives and interprets sensory signals. Can you see with your tongue? Eagleman explains how the brain doesn't actually care where information comes from. We explore sensory differences like blind people navigating the world through vibrations on their skin, echolocation, and tactile reading systems like Tadoma, and how the brain repurposes space for what’s needed.

Could dreams be the visual cortex defending its territory against a takeover from other senses during sleep? Learn about the transitions your brain makes in modulating sensory data. Are dreams the brain's screensaver? We discuss how the more neurologically plastic the species, the more it dreams. Why don't we remember our dreams? Why does eyewitness testimony fail so dramatically? What does the invisible gorilla experiment reveal about how little of reality we actually perceive? We explore how memory isn't a recorder, it's a reconstruction.

Learn about synesthesia, aphantasia, tetrachromacy, and how some of Pixar's best animators turned out to have no visual imagery in their heads at all. We break down time perception and why time seems to slow down in life-threatening situations. David tells us about how he dropped subjects from a 150-foot tower to find out. We explore memory density and why childhood summers felt endless and adult years blur past. Could time perception be the key to understanding and developing treatments for schizophrenia? Plus, the hardest question in all of science: why does it feel like anything to be a brain?

It’s A Bug’s Life, We’re Just Living In It, with Jessica Ware

💾

Go to https://ground.news/startalk to stay fully informed on the latest Space and Science news. Save 40% off through our link for unlimited access to the Vantage plan this month.

Why are bugs so weird? Neil deGrasse Tyson and Negin Farsad sit down with entomologist, Jessica Ware, to dig into the extraordinary world of bugs, insects the size of navel oranges, how they invented flying and so much more.

What actually is a bug? Learn how the way an insect eats determines whether they are a bug or not. Jessica traces insects back 400 million years to their single common ancestor. Discover how dragonflies were the original flying design for living things. Why are insects so successful on Earth? They predate dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years, were the first animals to fly, and have had enough time to fill every ecological niche on the planet.

Learn about dragonfly eyes and how their methods for mating impact their vision. What do dragonfly brains actually look like and what can they remember? Would territorial dragonflies have larger brains than non-territorial ones? Do migratory insects develop bigger brains to navigate? Is there a single common ancestor for all insects? We talk about the species unique to New York, cockroaches that only reluctantly share our spaces, and how warming weather will make our future more buggy. What would actually happen if we eliminated mosquitoes entirely? Jessica walks through why wiping out the three most dangerous species would be a net positive for humans, while the things that eat mosquitoes would largely survive.

The episode closes on the alarming collapse of insect populations worldwide. We break down all the ways that humans impact insects from light pollution disrupting firefly mating, urbanization destroying habitat, and the sobering reality that all life on land came after insects and still depends on them. Plus: what did bed bugs feed on before beds existed, and just how big can an insect actually get?

What does it look like beneath the surface of the sun? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice discuss the heliosphere, the Parker Solar Probe, and solar storms with heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta.

How do we know what’s going on inside the sun? We break down the techniques heliophysicists use to infer activity beneath the surface. Plus, how much matter has the sun lost since it began the fusion process? Learn how the sun maintains its mass despite all the energy it radiates.

We explore the sounds the sun would make if you could hear it in space. How might that sound differ between large and small stars? Can you see the boiling plasma on the surface of the sun? We discuss the heliosphere, the region outside the sun influenced by the solar wind, and how it protects us from solar radiation. How have NASA spacecraft “punched through” the heliosphere? What was the mission of the Parker Solar Probe, and what is it doing now?

How do coronal mass ejections interact with our atmosphere? Learn about how the sun creates aurora and Neil and Lika’s experiences with solar storms. Could a coronal mass ejection wipe out all electronics on Earth—or in orbit? What would happen if we had another Carrington Event, the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history?

Could there be other universes out there? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly answer science questions from celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Josh Scherer, Emily Blunt, and more.

Director Steven Spielberg asks about the empty space inside of an atom. We discuss how wide the gap is between the electrons and the nucleus and what keeps them from crashing into each other. How are scientists working to harness quantum tunneling and entanglement?

Producer Bill Prady asks if the multiverse is real. We break down what the universe looked like during the Big Bang. Can you solve the multiverse with math? Josh Scherer of Mythical Kitchen asks what plants Neil thinks need a genetic update. Learn about how humans have been modifying crops throughout history. Plus, Neil explains how we can get kids to eat their vegetables with GMOs.

Actress Riki Lindhome asks about the most misunderstood concept in the universe. Why do so many movies have sound in space? Would you really float around in a spaceship if you weren’t strapped down? Emily Blunt asks if Neil has ever had an alien encounter.
