Our political fictions series returns with Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty (2004), which is set between Thatcher’s two dominant general election victories of 1983 and 1987. A novel about the intersection between gay life and Tory life, high politics and low conduct, beauty and betrayal, it explores the price of power and the risks of liberation. It also contains perhaps the greatest of all fictional portrayals of a real-life prime minster: Thatcher dancing the night away.

Em 2017, o jornal The New York times revelou uma série de acusações de abusos sexuais, ocorridos ao longo de décadas contra o então produtor de Hollywood Harvey Weinstein.
Cada caso revelado incentivava uma nova denúncia, e, ao todo, 30 atrizes relataram terem sido abusadas por Weinstein – incluindo Gwyneth Paltrow e Angelina Jolie. Weinsten foi preso, condenado por estupro e agressão sexual, e o movimento Me Too, que incentiva mulheres abusadas sexualmente a denunciarem seus agressores, ganhou força inédita.
No mesmo período, entretanto, o mundo viveu uma forte onda conservadora. O cinema e as séries de TV parecem evitar erotismo e cenas de sexo, e plataformas como a Netflix desenvolveram até um botão para “pular” esses momentos.
