The male has an incredible mating display where it inflates a giant red membrane out of its left nostril! When I told my kids about it, they thought it was the most amazing thing they had ever heard of.
Ever since, I’ve been trying to turn the hooded seal into a plushie with an actual inflating red nose bubble. Well I’ve finally navigated all the design constraints that come with soft toy manufacturing and perfected all the little details, and I’m proud to say it’s ready for preorder!
I know this isn’t my typical subject matter but I’m a huge fan of biology behind the scenes, and this has been a bit of a passion project. So I hope you’ll take a look and consider placing an order.

Hooded seals live far up north in the Arctic. The sea ice there is disappearing faster than almost anywhere else on Earth, which is why they are now classified as endangered.

Al comienzo de mi carrera como profesora, en una clase de refuerzo con una estudiante (en un instituto de Inglaterra), estábamos practicando el vocabulario de relaciones personales y le dije que alguien había engañado a su pareja con otra persona. Al mismo tiempo que dije eso, me puse los cuernos con los dedos a mí misma, sobre la cabeza.
Ella intentó disimular todo lo que pudo, pero tras unos segundos me di cuenta de que algo fallaba. En su cara había un gesto un poco raro. Le pregunté si sabía por qué me había puesto unos cuernos sobre la cabeza y me dijo que no. En esos momentos, nos partimos de la risa... Y así estuvimos un rato.
Es uno de los recuerdos de mis primeros tiempos como profe de español que nunca olvidaré. Tuvo que pensar que estaba un poco loca. 🤭 Desde ese momento, nunca he creído de antemano que los españoles y otros países tuviéramos expresiones en común, aunque haya muchas que sí. Here’s the making of this teapot, from beginning to end.
There aren’t many forms that require as many steps as a teapot, not only do you need to throw and trim the parts, but you need to assemble them in such a way that the vessel functions properly. I’ve made some poor versions in my time. Pots that poured terribly, sputtering and glugging, some I’ve only been able to fill up half way due to incorrect spout placement and others have been fashioned with lids rattle in place and fall out as they’ve been trimmed too narrow for the opening. The thing is, you often have to make these unsatisfactory iterations before you figure out how to move on and improve them.
The other heinous thing to realise is that this improvement occurs very slowly, as comparatively, the number you’ll make will be far less than the mugs or bowls you throw and trim, and given how complex they are, the chances are you’ll ruin more when glazing them. Perhaps that’s simply my journey with them though, they are becoming finer with time but I genuinely feel as if each batch I make is better than the last and every time I make a few I know what alterations I have to make when I next assemble them.
Maybe, that’s what has kept me so intrigued over the years, it’s like slowly learning a language and becoming more fluent.

He has also participated in the Berlin Biennial (2006), the Whitney Biennial (1995, 1997, 2004), and the Venice Biennale (1993, 1999, 2001).

The world threw out 62 million tonnes of electronics in 2022, and less than a quarter of it reached proper recycling. The copper in that pile was worth about $19 billion. Demand climbs to roughly 33 million tonnes by 2035, while mined supply peaks in the late 2020s and then falls below 19 million. A new mine takes about 17 years to open, so digging can't close the gap in time. Recycled copper covered 18% of demand in 2015, and today it covers under 17%. The EU's Circular Economy Act aims to double Europe's rate by 2030, and UNEP argues recycling only works alongside using less copper in the first place.
