In early 1949, Beijing was still commonly known as Beiping. During the final phase of the Chinese Civil War, Communist forces surrounded the city, which was held by the Nationalists. Rather than being destroyed in a major battle, the city was peacefully transferred to Communist control in January 1949 after negotiations with Nationalist general Fu Zuoyi. This was significant because it preserved much of the city’s historic architecture, including the Forbidden City, temples, walls, and traditional neighborhoods.
Later that year, the city’s name was changed back from Beiping to Beijing, meaning “Northern Capital.” On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China from Tiananmen Gate. From that moment, Beijing became the symbolic and administrative heart of the new government.
During 1949–1950, the new Communist leadership began reorganizing the city’s political, social, and economic life. The new government emphasized discipline, reconstruction, and socialist values. Although the most dramatic urban redevelopment came later in the 1950s, the foundations were laid during these first years.
Overall, Beijing between 1949 and 1950 was a city in transition: it moved from civil war uncertainty into its role as the capital of a new revolutionary state. Its historical identity as an imperial capital remained visible, but its political meaning changed profoundly as it became the center of Communist China.
