THE PATH OF AUTOCRACY: Current Strategies for Democratic Erosion

Did you know that elections themselves do not guarantee democracy? And that it's not only a coup that weakens the democratic regime? An elected and re-elected leader can cause democratic erosion. And nowadays, there are politicians who use the mandate won at the polls to attack democracy and legitimize authoritarian practices.

This current movement of weakening democracy, focused on the figure of authoritarian leaders, is called autocratization.

LAUT observed the areas of education, civic space, and public safety in four countries. Based on what is seen in Poland, Hungary, India, and Turkey, 8 main strategies were identified that may compose this path, with greater or lesser emphasis.
