In Gaza, more than two million Palestinians have been corralled into about 104sq km (40sq miles), where Israeli forces consistently bomb them. Basic human requirements like clean water, food, electricity, medicine and durable shelter are hard to come by, with Israel imposing severe restrictions on humanitarian aid and groups. The United States-backed Board of Peace touts progress, but Rayburn tells host Steve Clemons that the situation on the ground has become "untenable and catastrophic".

The Alternative for Germany is on top in Sunday's election in the east German state of Saxony-Anhalt, with about 44 percent of the vote. It's benefited from voters' economic concerns and anger over immigration. The party is also leading in national polls. But Germany's domestic intelligence agency has classified its branch in Saxony-Anhalt as a proven right-wing extremist group, a label the AfD rejects. Chancellor Friedrich Merz insists there can be no co-operation with the AfD, and mainstream German parties have been maintaining a 'firewall' against forming coalitions with the far-right. But it's not clear if the strategy will hold.

Hospitals in Bangladesh are struggling to cope with a surge in measles cases, with patients travelling from across the country to Dhaka for treatment. Health officials say the outbreak stems from gaps in the national immunisation programme since 2022, worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic and political instability. A vaccination drive ran from April to May, with another planned this month, though experts remain divided over whether a medical emergency should be declared. Doctors also report a rise in post-measles complications, including pneumonia and flu, among recovering children.

The funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic has been held in Serbia’s capital with state honours, and attended by thousands. The former Bosnian Serb commander was found guilty of genocide against Bosniak Muslims in the 1990s. He died serving a life sentence at the ICC in The Hague.

Nepal is observing a day of national mourning for the victims of the flood disaster, with more than 1,300 people dead and thousands still missing. Climate policy specialist Abhishek Shrestha told Al Jazeera the disaster is “undoubtedly” linked to climate change, citing the IPCC's findings on Himalayan glacier recession. He said there are 47 potential glacial lakes in the Himalayan range that pose a threat of bursting, warning that “there is much likelihood this kind of incident might happen in coming years.” He called the event “an alarming bell” for better preparedness. Shrestha said Nepal needs unconditional recovery funds to avoid a further debt burden and stressed the need to “put mountain as one of the agenda items into the COP discussion”, adding that “for us, this climate change is about survival.” He also called for rethinking hydropower infrastructure and settlements near floodplains.
