室町時代中期に、箱根山系の豊富な木材を使って作られた挽物の器に、漆を塗ったのが始まりと言われます。
その後、この地方を支配していた北条氏が、小田原漆器を発展させるために漆器職人を城下に招いたことで、彩漆塗（いろうるしぬり）の技法が始められました。
江戸時代には盆、椀等の日用品の他に武具類にも漆を塗るようになり、実用的な漆器として漆器作りの技術が確立されたと考えられます。

At the beginning of the 15th century, there lived in nearby mountains a lot of woodworkers who made wooden substrates on a lathe, then applied raw lacquer on them. This is said to be the origin of Odawara-shikki. Clear lacquer is used to reserve the beautiful wood-grain. Since the different parts of wood offer a different wood-grain, a careful selection of wood is required.
