Today’s political trial is one of the most notorious in American history: eight men charged with and convicted of murder in 1886 for a terrorist outrage that none of them committed. A bomb had been thrown at the police during a workers’ rally in Chicago but this trial was not about punishing the person who threw it. Rather it was a witch hunt of the men and the movement that were thought to have inspired it. Anarchism was put on trial and condemned in the Haymarket case. Who promoted and who resisted the invasion of paranoia and conspiracy theories into an American courtroom? And was it anarchists or was it the forces of law and order that were ultimately responsible for Chicago’s descent into violence and retribution?

A questão é que a sensação de insegurança tem ido além das pessoas que estão sem as devidas documentações no país e há relatos de que a deportação tem sido utilizada como ferramenta política para perseguir opositores e críticos do governo.
Para refletir sobre essa realidade, Andrea Dip recebe no Pauta Pública desta semana, Jamil Chade, jornalista e escritor que acaba de lançar "Tomara que você seja deportado: uma viagem pela distopia americana”, um livro marcado por sua experiência pessoal, em que ele retrata os desafios diários mesmo em condições legais no país. A obra é resultado de uma viagem pela distopia estadunidense, no período entre a campanha eleitoral de Trump e a retomada de um governo autoritário, de perseguição às minorias e outros aspectos políticos e econômicos que evidenciam a decadência daquela sociedade.

The catastrophic flash flood killed over 107 people countywide, making it one of the deadliest inland flood events in U.S. history, with Camp Mystic suffering particularly devastating losses of at least 27 campers and counselors. Harrison Hall, the camp's central dining facility and community hub had its front wall torn off and roof badly damaged. Officials and experts have been hesitant to address key factors that worsened the disaster, including key failures in institutional response and cabins knowingly built in the floodplain. Although climate change has spiked the risk of extreme rainfall, its impact has still not been widely acknowledged.
In our latest 'Chatting the Pictures' video, we highlight the juxtaposition between a ripped-open Harrison Hall and the eerily placid Guadalupe River. We examine the transformation of classic camp imagery into wreckage and evidence. And, we utilize a rescue boat and a flood map to connect this institutional failure to broader patterns of systemic breakdown in protecting children and responding to the climate crisis.
