Uma placa de gelo com uma mancha escura que se mexe. Me aproximo e descubro um grande grupo de morsas. Animais enormes, quase do tamanho de metade do barco, com duas longas presas. Deixo o barco à deriva e algumas nadam ao nosso lado. Eu nunca tinha visto esses animais fora d’água. A placa de gelo é pequena demais para abrigar o grupo todo, e as morsas estão amontoadas umas sobre as outras. Algumas parecem brigar, batendo as presas umas contra as outras. Elas têm os hábitos típicos dos mamíferos que se sentem à vontade: dormem, arrotam e soltam gases que me deixam tonta no barco. Me afasto do grupo, porque ainda há muito gelo pela frente e, em breve, serei eu quem vai precisar desesperadamente dormir.

Ils ont les habitudes typiques des mammifères qui se sentent à l’aise : ils dorment, rotent et lâchent des gaz qui me donnent le vertige sur le bateau. Je m’éloigne du groupe, car il reste encore beaucoup de glace à parcourir et, d’ici peu, ce sera moi qui aurai désespérément besoin de dormir.

An ice floe with a dark, moving spot on it. I get closer and find a large group of walruses. Huge animals, almost half the size of the boat, with two long tusks. I let the boat drift, and some of them swim alongside us. I’d never seen these animals out of the water before. The ice floe is too small to hold the whole group, and the walruses are piled on top of one another. Some seem to be fighting, clacking their tusks against each other’s. They have the typical habits of mammals that feel at ease: they sleep, burp, and pass gas, which makes me dizzy on the boat. I move away from the group, because there’s still a lot of ice ahead, and soon I’ll be the one who desperately needs to sleep.

One way to add a certain amount of cohesion to a body of work, is to have one aesthetic feature that appears in some way shape or form on a vast majority of the pots you make. So recently, I’ve been trying to incorporate this very simple angular section into more of my vessels and in this particular case, it actually makes the lid slightly more ergonomic to use, as the groove around the outside makes it easier to lift away.
Like mentioned in the video, I went from really disliking this pot, to the point where I considered destroying it at the bone-dry stage, to absolutely loving it, which is a rare event in many ways as typically, if I dislike a pot after it’s been trimmed, the chances are I’ll continue to shun it even when it has been glazed and reduction fired.
I like a pleasant surprise though, as this pot has made it onto my current “favourites” shelf, what do you think?
We celebrate the 100th episode of our Advice to the Young series with legendary artist and teacher Michael Craig-Martin, who shares his thoughts on what to treasure in life.
“Pay attention to what you are happy doing. To what you are good at. People take their gifts for granted. If something comes naturally to you, you kind of assume that it is natural to everybody. And you are wrong. The things that are natural to you aren’t natural to anybody else. They are yours.”
Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1941. He grew up and was educated in the United States, studying Fine Art at the Yale School of Art and Architecture. He has lived and worked in Britain since 1966.
His first solo exhibition was at the Rowan Gallery in London in 1969. He participated in the definitive exhibition of British conceptual art, The New Art at the Hayward Gallery in 1972. His best known works include An oak tree of 1973, in which he claimed to have changed a glass of water into an oak tree; his large-scale black and white wall drawings; and his intensely coloured paintings, installations, and commissions, including the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, the Laban Dance Centre in London (in collaboration with Herzog and de Meuron), the DLR station at Woolwich Arsenal, and, most recently, the HDI Gerling Headquarters in Hannover.
Over the past forty-two years, he has had numerous exhibitions and installations in galleries and museums across the world, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and MoMA, New York; the Kunstvereins in Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, and Hannover; IVAM in Valencia; and Kunsthaus Bregenz. He represented Britain at the 23rd São Paulo Biennial. A retrospective of his work was presented at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, in 1989; a second at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2006; and a third at the Serpentine Gallery, London, in 2015.
Craig-Martin is well known for being an influential teacher at Goldsmiths College, London. He was a Tate Trustee from 1989 to 1999, was awarded a CBE in 2000, and was elected an RA in 2006. In 2016, he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to art.
Michael Craig-Martin was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner in his London studio in February 2026.
